Fire Safety Tips
Welcome to the Fire Prevention page of the Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department! Our department is committed to promoting fire safety and preventing fires in our community. We believe that education and awareness are key to reducing the risk of fires and protecting our community.
Here are some tips to help prevent fires in your home:
- Install smoke detectors on every level of your home and outside each sleeping area. Test them monthly and replace batteries yearly.
- Keep all flammable materials away from heat sources, including candles, heaters, and stoves.
- Make sure that all electrical cords are in good condition and not frayed or damaged.
- Do not overload outlets or extension cords. Use surge protectors instead.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and know how to use it.
- Never leave cooking food unattended on the stove.
- Keep all matches and lighters out of reach of children.
- Develop a fire escape plan and practice it with your family.
In addition to these tips, we offer the following resources and services to help promote fire safety in our community:
- Fire safety presentations for schools and community groups
- Fire safety inspections of homes and businesses
- Smoke detector installations for low-income families and the elderly
- Educational materials and resources on fire prevention and safety
